The church was originally built as a chapel for the house of the Mounthaunt family, from Norfolk, from whom the church took its name. In around 1234 the house and the patronage of the church were bought by Ralph de Maydenstone, Bishop of Hereford. WebRobert Hopton (died 1590), of Yoxford, Suffolk of St Mary Mounthaw, London, was Knight Marshal of the Household 1560-1577, and English Member of Parliament for Mitchell in 1563.
